Besteman Awarded Coach of the Year

The Pettit National Ice Center, a U.S. Olympic Training Facility, is very pleased to announce that U.S. Speedskating has acknowledged Dave Besteman as one of the recipients of the 2003 Coaches of the Year Award.

Awarded to the Developmental Coach of the Year by U.S. Speedskating, Besteman has strong ties to the Pettit National Ice Center. Besteman coaches for the West Allis Speed Skating Club, which trains extensively at the Pettit. The West Allis Speedskating Club coach calls the Pettit home as he practices with his athletes almost everyday at the local U.S. Olympic Training Facility.

Some of Besteman’s accomplishments as coach in the 2002-2003 season were the leadership of three short track National Champions and ten State Champion speed skaters. Moreover, Besteman led two of his skaters to the U.S. Junior Category 1 short track program.

Along with Besteman, U.S. Speedskating also acknowledged ten volunteer coaches as finalists for Volunteer Coach of the Year awards, with three of them having ties to the state of Wisconsin. Jeff Brand of Badger Speed Skating Club, Green Bay’s Shannon Holmes of Corner Stone Speed Skating Club and Tom Riley of the Madison Speed Skating Club were all recognized for their hard work and dedication over the past year.

“The great thing is, several of these honored coaches can be found right here at the Pettit National Ice Center on a daily basis,” said Carl Cepuran, developmental coordinator for U.S. Speedskating. “This underscores the vitality and importance of the Pettit as an integral part of the development of athletes and the sport of speed skating.”

The Pettit Center is very proud of all the speed skating coaches noted above and would like to congratulate Dave Besteman for being named a 2003 Coach of the Year. There are numerous other tremendous hockey, speed and figure skating coaches and instructors that teach out of the Pettit National Ice Center and all of these hard-working individuals help skaters from around the area to be as great as they can be.
