Pettit Center To Host 2nd Annual Indoor Marathon

The Pettit National Ice Center will host the 2nd annual InStep Icebreaker Indoor Marathon January 2010.

Believed to be the largest indoor marathon in the United States (if not the world), the InStep Icebreaker Indoor Marathon will give runners the rare opportunity to take part in a marathon, in the state of Wisconsin during the coldest time of the year.

Last year's inaugural Icebreaker Marathon featured just one race, a full 26.2-mile marathon.  The event sold out, received international media coverage and quickly became a favorite event of those that took part.  The 2009 race winner was Madison’s Bryan Schneider, who went on to finish 121st out of over 20,000 runners in this year's Boston Marathon.  The indoor marathon field consisted of runners of all abilities and from 11 states ranging from Texas to Pennsylvania.

Two new events will highlight the Indoor Marathon with the addition of a half-marathon and a marathon relay to this unique running event at the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee.  The races will take place over two days, January 23-24, 2010.

"We thought the next logical step would be to add the half marathon and marathon relay," said Race Director Chris Ponteri.  "We had several runners tell us that they would be interested in running in those events if we had them."

The half marathon and the marathon relay will be held on Saturday and the full marathon on Sunday.  Both the half and the full marathons will have slots for 120 runners.  Thirty of the slots in both the half and full marathons will be reserved for runners who sign up for the Gold Medal Challenge. Similar to the Goofy Challenge at the Walt Disney Marathon and Half Marathon, runners will have the chance to take part in all three of the Icebreaker’s events.

“I have personally received rave reviews and great interest from people who wish to run in both races,” Ponteri said.  “A unique challenge like running two races in one weekend is very appealing to many distance runners.”

Registration for the InStep Icebreaker Indoor Marathon is expected to open on Monday, August 3 at 8 a.m.  Those interested in participating can check the race website at www.indoormarathon.com for more information.
