Home to the Homeschoolers

The Pettit National Ice Center, a U.S Olympic Training Facility, hosts a wide range of groups and individuals every day. One group that has discovered the effectiveness of Milwaukee’s premier ice center is Milwaukee-area homeschool students. The Greater Milwaukee Catholic Home Educators just wrapped up a six-week program that focused on introducing skating as a fun and healthy alternative for physical education.

Since homeschool students usually don’t have a gym or recreational facility of their own, parents must look elsewhere for opportunities to satisfy their children’s physical education needs. All homeschool students, like their counterparts in traditional schools, must have health curriculum worked in with the rest of their educational lessons.

“As a homeschooling family, we can take advantage of the Pettit’s daytime ice sessions. Through skating, our 12-year-old son practices self-discipline, while he gains confidence and physical skills. Also he has learned that he loves to skate!” exclaims Lisa Rivero, one homeschool parent who has found the Pettit very effective.

The Pettit National Ice Center has now developed programs specifically designed for homeschool students, their siblings and their parents. The students are invited to the Pettit Center on specific homeschool student-only sessions during the daytime, and are taught not only how to ice skate, but how skating can be beneficial to them on many levels. The students work on balance and technique, and most of all they have a lot of fun. The fun they have on the ice makes it easy to incorporate physical activity as an integral part of their lives.

The Greater Milwaukee Catholic Home Educators is just one group of homeschoolers that have found great benefit in the Pettit National Ice Center. Many other homeschool students, including some members of the Wisconsin Figure Skating Club, utilize the Pettit every day for their physical education curriculum. Top-flight Pettit instructors can offer programs and education that is unmatched anywhere else in the state of Wisconsin.
