Great Lakes Glides Into Pettit This Saturday

The Pettit National Ice Center, a U.S. Olympic Training Facility, will host the 33rd annual Great Lakes Short Track Speed Skating Championships on November 1 & 2. The Championships are sanctioned by both U.S. Speedskating and the Wisconsin Skating Association (WSA), and is a WSA Short Track Qualifying Meet. The Great Lakes Championship is co-sponsored locally by the West Allis Speed Skating Club and the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District Recreation Department.

The Great Lakes Championships, an amateur level meet, will feature nearly 150 skaters from all over the United States. This annual meet will bring in skaters from many regions including Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Alaska and Ohio. Speed Skaters of all ages and skill levels will be descending upon the Pettit for a meet that is eagerly awaited for every year by the national speed skating community.

In addition to a contingent of skaters from around the nation, many of the Junior Olympic Team hopefuls who currently train in Marquette, Michigan will also be adding to the excitement of the weekend. The Great Lakes Championships will even have entrants in the Special Needs category racing during the meet.
