Local Skaters To Compete At Madison Open

The Pettit National Ice Center, a U.S. Olympic Training Facility, is sending off a large group of local skaters to compete in the upcoming 2003 Madison Open. The Pettit National Ice Center and the Wisconsin Figure Skating Club (WFSC) are backing more than twenty Milwaukee-area skaters to compete in the 22nd Annual Madison Open, September 19-21, 2003.

Joining the contingent of Pettit and WFSC skaters is 10-year-old Nanoha Sato of New Berlin. Sato looks to extend her winning streak this weekend after claiming the recent Intermediate Ladies Championship at the 2003 DuPage Open in Illinois. Sato is continuing her work on the ice with an eye toward the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

“The Madison Open is the last non-qualifying competition for our skaters before the marquee October Upper Great Lakes Regional in Minneapolis,” said the Pettit’s co-skating director Lyn Paulsen. “Madison gives our skaters a chance to fine tune their programs and to decide what should be included for Regionals.”

The 2003 Madison Open will feature more than 250 skaters representing 30 clubs from Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and Iowa. Held at the Madison Ice Arena, the Open is hosted by the Figure Skating Club of Madison and is a United States Figure Skating Association sanctioned event. The Madison Open begins gliding away on Friday morning (9/19) and concludes Sunday afternoon (9/21).

Wisconsin Figure Skating Club members, alongside other figure skaters, train at the Pettit National Ice Center on a year-round basis and compete in many other events around the state and nation.
