Skating School Glides In At Pettit

The Pettit National Ice Center will add to its programs and special features with the debut of the all-new Skating School. The Skating School will offer the basic skills class curriculums developed by both The United States Figure Skating Association and USA Hockey. The Skating School will commence on September 2, 2003 in conjunction with other Pettit programs.

This one of a kind Skating School makes skill development enjoyable for everyone of all ages and levels by keeping skaters enthusiastic about learning from the time they begin lessons until they reach their goals. The Skating School’s main objectives are to provide a safe skating experience, teach correct technique, develop a finer degree of coordination and balance, promote personal physical fitness, and have fun, fun, fun!

A professional teaching staff, led by the Pettit’s new Skating Co-Directors Lynn Paulsen and Lisa Reid, will instruct Skating School students. Paulsen, a competitive figure skating coach with 30 years of experience, has been an instructor for 11 years with the Pettit’s Learn-To-Skate program. Lynn has coached skaters at all levels including the national ranks. Lisa Reid has been a competitive figure skating coach for 17 years, holds a United States Figure Skating Association Gold medal in Ice Dancing, and comes in as an experienced Skating Director. A key area of interest is in the development of strong skating skills for hockey players with an emphasis on power skating.

“I get a thrill when I watch a child progress from not being able to even stand on the ice to attaining a level of competency which allows them to skate as a life skill, or pursue their competitive goals in figure skating, hockey, or speed skating,” said Reid

Reid continued, “The unique training environment that The Pettit provides an awesome opportunity for kids in the Milwaukee area to learn along side athletes who aspire to many different levels of competition.”

Anyone aspiring to learn how to skate or to become an elite-level skater needs to begin with basic skills development. This Skating School provides participants with the necessary fundamentals to continue in a figure skating, speed skating, or hockey program by following a fun, yet challenging curriculum.

“We are extremely excited about the changes being made at the Pettit. The positive atmosphere and new programs have already generated substantial enthusiasm,” said Paulsen.

Paulsen went on, “Milwaukee has some wonderfully talented young skaters and with our new U.S Figure skating and U.S.A. Hockey program we will only get bigger and better!”
