Olympic Edge Camp Crosses Borders

The Pettit National Ice Center, a U.S. Olympic Training Facility, is teaming up with the Olympic Oval in Calgary to host the 2004 Olympic Edge Speedskating Development Camp from June 21 through June 26.

Speed skating Hall of Famers Bonnie Blair-Cruikshank (’84, ’88, ’92, ’94 Olympian) and Chuck Burke (’52, ’56 Olympian) are just two of the numerous speed skating legends that will be on hand to instruct athletes during the weeklong camp. US Speedskating’s coach of the year and Wisconsin’s own David Besteman (’92, ’94 Olympian) and Casey FitzRandolph (’98, ’02 OIympian) will also be making appearances to share their wisdom and insight to all participating skaters.

There will be more than a dozen former Olympic Team speed skaters serving as coaches at the Olympic Edge camp. Some of the coaches include U.S. greats such as Dave Cruikshank (‘88, ’92, ’94, ’98 Olympian), Moira Marshall (’92, ’98 Olympics), Nancy Swider-Peltz (’76, ’84, ’88 Olympian), Dave Tamburrino (’94, ’98 Olympian) as well as many others. Also joining the U.S. legends will be renowned Canadian speed skaters Kevin Overland (’98 Olympian), Tony Meibock (’92 Olympian) and Jacques Thibault (’80, ’84 Olympian).

The Olympic Edge Camp marks the first time that the Pettit National Ice Center and the Calgary Olympic Oval have partnered together to present a positive learning experience for speed skaters of all ages.

"I am very excited to help take part in this first ever event, where not only will we be teaming up with some of the best Canadian Olympians but also joining forces with such a great facility as Calgary,” says six-time Olympic medallist and Olympic Edge Coach Bonnie Blair-Cruikshank. “In the long run we hope to touch many young lives that will be the future of our sport."

The registration deadline for the Olympic Edge Camp is May 15. Participants can find registration forms on the Calgary Olympic Oval website at www.oval.ucalgary.ca, or information can be picked up at the Pettit Center. The camp is on a first come, first serve basis and space is limited.
