Pettit Celebrates National Skating Week

The Pettit National Ice Center, a U.S. Olympic Training Facility, will take part in U.S. Figure Skating’s third annual National Skating Week, January 10-18, 2004. The Pettit will hold an open house for the general public on Saturday, January 17, to coincide with the weeklong celebration.

Designed for skaters of all ages and abilities, the “Test Drive the Ice” open house session will feature an array of activities for the public to enjoy on Saturday, January 17, from 11 a.m. – 1p.m. Some of the activities that will be offered include:

• FREE Drop-in Skating Lessons with the Pettit’s Skating School
• Exhibitions by Hockey, Figure and Speed skaters
• FREE ½ hour of Skating on the Olympic Oval with games
• Tours of the Pettit National Ice Center Facility
• FREE movie passes for Disney’s new “Miracle” film

The open house will allow people of all ages to experience different types of skating and learn the “basics” from professional instructors in a fun filled environment.

“We are inviting everyone to come to the Pettit and experience the fun of skating,” said Gino Cavallini, the Pettit’s vice president of programming. “Whether you have skated in the past or are just lacing up skates for the first time, we will show you how skating can be both great exercise and a great time.”

As an added attraction, the Pettit is hosting the Great Lakes Long Track speed skating competition, which will precede the open house at 8 a.m. The Great Lakes meet will feature more than 130 skaters from all over the nation competing on the Pettit’s Olympic Oval. Moreover, public skating will also be offered on the Olympic Oval from 1 p.m. – 3p.m and anyone who signs up for the Pettit Skating School on Saturday will get to skate for free.
