US Speedskating World Team To Be Chosen at Pettit Center

The Pettit National Ice Center, a U.S. Olympic Training Site, will serve as host for the 2006 Fall World Cup Qualifier/U.S. Single Distance Championships, starting Thursday, October 19 and continuing through Sunday, October 22.

The World Cup Qualifier will be the first competition of the 2006 – 2007 skating season and will feature some of the best long track speed skaters in the United States. Headlining the event will be 2006 Winter Olympic gold, silver and bronze medallist Chad Hedrick. Hedrick will look to break some Pettit Center track records as he races on both Friday, October 20 and Saturday, October 21.

Joining Hedrick at the World Cup Qualifier will be more 2006 U.S. Olympians along with skaters with strong Wisconsin ties. Catherine Raney (Elm Grove, Wisconsin), Kip Carpenter (Brookfield, Wisconsin), Maria Lamb (River Falls, Wisconsin) Tucker Fredricks (Janesville, Wisconsin) and Elli Ochowicz (Waukesha, Wisconsin) all were 2006 Winter Olympians and will be in action at the Pettit Center.

Along with a slew of past Olympians, the World Cup Qualifier will also include junior level skaters who are viewed as U.S. Speedskating’s future stars and record-holders. Many of the junior skaters train daily at the Pettit Center and call Wisconsin home.

Once the Qualifier is complete on Sunday, US Speedskating will choose members of its long track world team, who will compete internationally through the fall World Cup series. The long track skaters will be back again on the Pettit Center’s Olympic Oval December 19-23 for the U.S. Long Track Speedskating Championships.

Racing begins at 10am on Thursday with the meet coming to an end on Sunday.
