USOC Grant Program Introduced At Pettit Center
MILWAUKEE--- September 13, 2007 --- The Pettit National Ice Center, a
U.S.
Olympic Training Facility, is proud to announce a new grant program in
association with the U.S. Olympic Committee and U.S. Speedskating.
As part of the Olympic Opportunity Fund, the Pettit Center’s USOC grant
will
provide more than 100 inner city youth with the chance to take speed
skating
lessons. Importantly, the program will teach speed skating utilizing
a new
curriculum developed by U.S. Speedskating and U.S. Figure Skating that
does
not require participants to wear speed skates.
The six-week program is anticipated to begin in mid-October. Classes
will
most likely be held during the day (as part of a school physical
education
experience). Pettit Center Skating School instructors, as well as the
Pettit Center Short Track team will lead the on-ice session.
In 2007 the USOC initiated the Olympic Opportunity Fund program to
encourage
growth of Olympic and Paralympic sports involvement through
community-based
athletic programs. The goal of this initiative is to facilitate the
introduction or growth of grassroots programs that will increase
participation and membership in National Governing Body sports.
