Famous Pettit Center Olympic Oval Gets New Look
The Pettit National Ice Center, a U.S. Olympic Training Site, is putting the finishing touches on a new look for its famous Olympic Oval.
The process of installing new ice began July 10. In addition to a blanket of white covering the 400-meter track, a new blue warm-up lane was created. The treatment is similar to that utilized for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. Additional ISU-required markings have also been added to the Olympic Oval, along with the Pettit Center logo.
The Olympic Oval will be ready again for speed skating action starting next week. The new International Team Milwaukee, featuring skaters from the U.S., Poland and England and directed by Coach Bob Fenn will be one of the first to utilize the Olympic Oval. Additionally, the Quebec (Canada) Team will hold its annual camp at the Pettit Center later in July.
Public skating will return to the Olympic Oval, as well, as the Pettit Center ramps up for the Wisconsin State Fair. The Pettit Center Cool Zone will once again feature free skating on the Olympic Oval along with other attractions including exhibits from the Wisconsin Historical Museum’s popular, “Skating for Gold: Wisconsin’s Olympic Speed Skaters.”
