Olympic Day Run/Walk July 8
New Event Benefits the Pettit National Ice Center

MILWAUKEE--- June 21, 2007 --- Participants in the Pettit National Ice Center’s Olympic Day Run/Walk will support the nonprofit training and recreation center, and they’ll also be the first to run on the Olympic Oval. That’s because the 5k run/walk course finishes inside the Pettit Center and incorporates a partial lap around the 400-meter Olympic Oval made famous by Dan Jansen, Bonnie Blair and Chris Witty – some of Wisconsin’s Olympic speed skating greats. The difference this time, of course: The oval will be free of ice.

In addition to the chance to run on the Olympic Oval, there are plenty of other reasons to join the fun on July 8. Proceeds from the event will help the 501(c)(3) Pettit Center to support its mission of providing skating experiences for individuals of all ages and abilities. Annually the Pettit Center welcomes about 500,000 visitors including youth from throughout Southeastern Wisconsin. Interestingly, a portion of the funds raised also will be earmarked to replace the Pettit Center’s indoor running track. The Pettit Center features a 450-meter indoor run/walk track that is utilized by thousands of individuals and organizations each year.

All participants in the Olympic Day Run/Walk will receive a T-shirt and goodie bag. Pledge prizes will include Olympic merchandise – and participants can also win a free annual track pass or even a ride on the Zamboni. Registration for the Olympic Day 5k Run/Walk is $20 for adults ($25 on Race Day), and $10 for children ($15 on Race Day). You can mail, fax or drop off your registration at the Pettit Center. Online registration is also available through thepettit.com or active.com. Medals will be given to the top three male and female finishers in 13 age divisions (starting with ages 9-14 and continuing to 70-plus), and each participant receives a free track pass and free skating pass.
