Throwin’ Stones At The Pettit Center
U.S. Curling Camps Start Friday

MILWAUKEE--- June 14, 2007 --- The Pettit National Ice Center, a U.S. Olympic Training Site, will host the United States Curling Association’s Elite and Development Curling Camps, June 15 – June 17. Together, these programs will attract nearly 100 athletes, coaches and trainers to Milwaukee. Included among the group are 2006 U.S. Olympic Curling Team Members.

The weekend marks the first time the Pettit National Ice Center has hosted a U.S. Curling Association camp. It’s also the first time the U.S. Curling Association has combined an Elite and Development camp.

To accommodate the two camps, the Pettit Center installed four international-size curling sheets on one of its two inner skating rinks. Expert ice makers from the U.S. Curling Association will oversee the actual preparation of the Pettit Center’s curling ice; and that process will also be taped and featured in a video being produced by the U.S. Curling Association.

“The U.S. Curling Association is pleased to be holding its High Performance Camp at the Pettit Center,” said Ed Lukowich, US Curling’s Athlete Development Director. “The top Elite Curling Athletes in the country will focus their efforts into getting an early summer start with their off-season training programs in preparation for a strong curling season commencing in September. The goal is to give these athletes every opportunity to 'reach for the top' in their efforts in winning medals at the World Championships over the next two years and also the Winter Olympics 2010 in Vancouver, Canada.”

Besides curling athletes, U.S. Curling coaches will be hard at work at the Pettit Center.

“This is a great opportunity for coaches in the U.S. Curling Association. We'll have one of the nation's best sports podiatrists working with the coaching attendees to help them learn how to assess balance issues in their athletes,” said Lynita Docken, U.S. Curling’s Junior Athlete Development Director. “There also will be a sports trainer working with the coaches and their "guinea pigs" to plan off season training. I'm very excited to coming to the Pettit Center for the first time with our coaches and athletes!”

The curlers will participate in a variety of on-ice and off-ice sessions throughout the weekend. These sessions will be lead by U.S. Curling Association Coaches as well as representatives from the United States Olympic Committee. On-ice activity will include video analysis and there are a variety of off-ice programs including fitness sessions and nutritional seminars.

While all on- and off-ice sessions will be held at the Pettit Center, the group is utilizing the adjacent Tommy Thompson Youth Center for food and lodging.
