Pettit Squirts Take Home Title In Dream Game

The Pettit National Ice Center, a U.S. Olympic Training Site, is proud to announce the recent success of its Squirt youth hockey team.

The Pettit Youth Hockey Squirts, consisting of 11 players who are 9, 10, and 11 years old, won the recent Squirt-C 2007 Elmbrook Hockey Shoot-Out tournament championship.

Their first game against Appleton Blue, was a close contest that resulted in a 2-2 tie.   A shoot-out of the first 5 skaters secured the Pettit's win.   The second game, against Appleton Green, was also a close match that resulted in a 2-2 tie.   A shoot-out of the first 5 skaters secured the Pettit's victory, which placed them in competition for the tournament championship.

For the third and final game, the Pettit Squirts faced off against Waukesha Black.   The Pettit Squirts battled furiously with Pettit goalie Scott Pelkowski facing over 20 shots.   The Pettit Squirts fought to tie the game 1-1, which sent the game into an overtime shoot-out.

The overtime shoot-out featured 5 skaters from each team attempting to score one-on-one against each goalie. This shoot-out resulted -- once again -- in a tie, which sent the game into a stunning series of sudden death shoot-outs.

After regulation time expired, 21 individual rounds of sudden death shoot-outs were conducted by each team, yielding 35 minutes of incredible drama.   The Pettit Squirts finally prevailed when they scored an unmatched goal leading them to the victory score of 5-4.

Goalie Scott Pelkowski, when asked how he felt afterwards, replied, "It feels like a dream."   Carl Thiesen, one of the Elmbrook Hockey Shoot-Out Tournament Coordinators, described the game as "unbelievable" and added that, in the history of the rink and the tournament's association there never has been such an exciting game.

Pettit Squirt Coach Chris Faust was pleased.   "The team really pulled together.   All of the shoot-outs brought the Pettit Squirts to a new level of play.   What a wonderful way for these kids to end this year's hockey season."
