Pettit Hockey Team Fares Well At Tournament
The Pettit National Ice Center, a U.S Olympic Training Site, is proud to announce the recent success of one of our hockey teams.
The Pettit Youth Hockey Mites, consisting of skaters who are 6-, 7- and 8-years-old, spent this past weekend (February 2-4) in Black River Falls, Wisconsin competing in the Black River Falls Mite B Hockey Tournament. For the 2nd consecutive season, the Pettit Mites came home with the Championship Trophy.
Not miffed by the record freezing temperatures (outside and inside the rink) the Mites started out smoking with a 10-1 victory over the host team from Black River Falls.
The Pettit Mites came ready to play with hand-warmers in tow for the second game against Altoona. The Mites prevailed 5-0 and placed themselves in the championship game on Sunday morning vs. New Richmond.
The championship game was a back-and-forth affair with New Richmond jumping out to an early 3-1 lead. The Pettit Mites battled back to tie the game in the 3rd period sending the game into an overtime shootout. The exciting overtime featured 3 players from each team attempting to score one-on-one against each goalie. After each of the teams' 3 players scored the game then went into a sudden death shootout.
In the sudden death overtime, only one player from each team had a chance to score. The Pettit Mites scored on their first attempt and left New Richmond with the chance to put the game back in a dead heat. The New Richmond shot went wide, paving they way for the second consecutive tournament championship for the Pettit Mites.
"I am very proud of the Mites for not only winning their second title in a row, but also for playing so well in the cold. The rink in Black River Falls was the coldest I have ever experienced in my 25 years of playing and coaching hockey. These kids showed so much toughness in winning it all," said Tom Zienkiewicz Pettit Center Hockey Director and Mites coach.
