Marquee Speed Skating Event Coming To Pettit Center

The Pettit National Ice Center, a U.S Olympic Training Site, will serve as host for the regional qualifying event for the 2007 World Allround Speed Skating Championships for North American and Oceanic ISU Members.

This marquee speed skating competition will include U.S. and Canadian skaters, as well as some past Olympians and medal winners.   The Regional Qualifier is important because with a top 5 finish (5 males and 5 females) skaters can qualify themselves for the 2007 World Allround Championships, February 10-11 in Holland.

Both U.S. and Canadian skaters will be duking it out on the Pettit's Olympic Oval to lay claim to their spot at the Allround Championships.   Skaters at the Pettit Center won't be short on talent and will include:

Chad Hedrick - a 2006 Olympian and multiple medal winner, Hedrick was the 2004 World Allround champion and just won the 10,000 meter race at the recent U.S. Long Track Championships held at the Pettit Center

Catherine Raney - a veteran of three Olympics and a native of Elm Grove, Wisconsin, Raney just took home the ladies Allround title at the recent U.S. Long Track Championships

Ryan Leveille - a short track and long track skater, Leveille is not only a member of the Pettit Center's short track team, he is also a member of both the long track and short track World Cup teams.   Leveille was also a 2006 Olympian and competed in the 10,000 meter race

Clara Hughes - a 2006 Olympian who helped lead a strong Canadian effort in Torino; Hughes won a silver medal in the Team Pursuit and gold medal in the 5000 meters.

Additionally, three (3) of the male Canadian skaters who will be competing at the Pettit Center took home silver in the Team Pursuit at the 2006 Winter Olympics.   In total, the Canadian contingent includes six (6) skaters who were Olympic medal winners in 2006.

Racing will begin at 9am on both Saturday, January 13 and Sunday, January 14.
