Pettit Speed Skaters Have Fine Showing at U.S. Olympic Trials
The Pettit National Ice Center, a U.S. Olympic Training Facility, wrapped up a record-breaking holiday season.
The Pettit Center’s seasonal celebration, Holidazzle, came to an end on New Year’s Day after a huge week of public skating. Nearly 11,000 people went gliding along the Pettit Center’s Olympic Oval from December 24 to January 2. That’s the most during the holiday since at least 1999 – and is up 16 percent compared to the prior year.
“Coming off the World Cup in November, when we saw every Pettit Center speed skating record broken, it’s just as exciting to see so many people skating at Wisconsin’s Olympic Training Facility,” said Cindy Yomantas, executive director of the Pettit Center. “Families from all over Wisconsin, the U.S. and the world have fun skating on our Olympic Oval.”
The Pettit Center features one of only 11 indoor Olympic Ovals in the World. Additionally, a popular 450-meter running track hugs the outside of the oval and provides a year-round indoor running and walking destination for thousands.
Holidazzle, which began the day after Thanksgiving, came to a close on New Year’s Day. Throughout the holiday season there were skating sessions with Santa Claus, extended public skating hours, Candy Cane Club Crafts, jingle bells on skates, a winter wonderland of trees and other festive holiday decorations on display.
